Description

Congressman Andy Levin is pleased to announce the second year of the MLK Jr. Day Youth Conference! There is an unmet opportunity to wrestle with the fundamental lessons of Dr. King’s life: the long-term movement-building and nonviolent struggle that enabled the wins of the Civil Rights era; and the extent to which Dr. King took brave and unpopular stances – he was no Hallmark Card figure of universal acclaim in his time. In partnership with district leaders and educators, the Office of Congressman Andy Levin aims to provide young people in the 9th District with a deep learning experience about Dr. King’s philosophy and activities — and an opportunity to reflect about the relevance of this history for their own lives and the challenges of today. Through the conference and pre-conference learning activities, students will begin to: Learn the differentiation between social service and social justice Gain a better understanding of the nonviolent action/long-term organizing that enabled the accomplishments of the Civil Rights movement Find relevance in Civil Rights history for today’s challenges and their future work for social justice Take on action plans on a specific issue The conference will be held in-person at the Sterling Heights Library on Saturday, January 15th, 2022 from 5:00PM-7:30PM. Changemakers from 2021 will be invited to join again to continue their learning of these topics. We will also welcome a new group of Changemakers to join us. The theme title “What is Your Dream?” is meant to provoke students to think with specificity about their action plans and how they can take realistic steps to support systemic change in their continuing high school careers and after graduation.
