Description

NEWTON, MA — The Newton City Council will caucus and elect leadership for the upcoming term on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Although the next City Council President, Vice President, and President Emeritus will be formally nominated and elected at Inauguration in January 2022, it is tradition for the Councilors to convene informally to choose officers for the upcoming term. Last week, Lisle Baker, Ward 7 Ward Councilor and the current President Emeritus, put his name in for consideration for Vice President. Ward 2 Councilor-at-Large Susan Albright is currently the President and Ward 8 Councilor-At-Large Richard Lipof the Vice President. The Council Rules that govern the formal election in January are usually adopted by the caucus. Assuming that is the case this year, the nomination and election must first occur within a Committee of the Whole and a candidate must succeed in attaining 13 votes if the full Council is present and voting. Wednesday meeting will be a hybrid meeting and residents will be able to watch in person at City Hall or remotely via Zoom. To view the agenda, click here.
