WESTFIELD, NJ — With the holiday season in full swing, people are on the road at all hours, getting holiday shopping done, visiting loved ones and driving past holiday light displays. While it might seem like the most wonderful time, Westfield firefighters warn drivers to be extra cautious on the roads this season. Over Thanksgiving weekend, Westfield fire crews responded to a two-car crash at South Chestnut & St. Marks. Two SUV's collided and hit a utility pole. Only minor injuries were reported and no one had to be taken to the hospital, but the cars were damaged. Following the crash, the Westfield FMBA Local 30 firefighters union urged drivers to use caution in the coming weeks. "Roadways will be busier over the next few weeks. Use extra caution driving, especially downtown and on side streets," the union wrote. Westfield fire crews aren't the only ones gearing up for holiday drivers to take the roads, New Jersey State Troopers are starting the annual impaired driving crackdown "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over." The campaign lasts from Dec. 3 through Jan. 1. The New Jersey State Police will have 96 additional troopers statewide during the holidays.
