Here are the top four stories in Laurel today: Greenbelt Metro Station that is a 21-minute drive off the B/W Parkway from Laurel, has an increased police presence after a carjacking. Police are still looking for the suspects in a pair of recent carjackings. The first crime happened early Sunday afternoon. Greenbelt Police said three people stole a Prius at gunpoint about 40 minutes after a shooting was reported at an apartment complex nearby the station. The theory is that the three carjackers were also involved in that shooting, which left a man in critical condition. (WTOP) Mayor Craig A. Moe asks Laurel residents to join him in sending condolences to the family and friends of former Mayor Doris (Dani) Duniho who passed away last month. Duniho served as the City of Laurel's first woman mayor from 1986 to 1990. She was married to Michael A. Duniho for over 55 years, and they had two sons. (City of Laurel)According to the Laurel Police Department, an illegal firearm was removed from the streets of Laurel. While conducting a routine traffic stop on Friday evening, officers recovered a 9mm handgun and a 30 round magazine concealed on the person of one of the occupants of the vehicle. Daniel Blankenship, a resident of Laurel, was placed under arrest for the unregistered, illegal firearm.
