3 Akins High School Students Found With Magazines, No Gun: AISD

AUSTIN, TX — Three students at Akins High School were detained after police discovered two handgun magazines, one loaded with ammunition, on campus Wednesday morning. The school was placed on lockdown for several hours after reports of an armed person. Akins High School, which is located at 10701 S 1st Street, was put on lockdown around 10:11 a.m. on reports of an armed person on campus, according to Austin ISD Police Chief Ashley A. Gonzalez. AISD police first heard the reports after a student said they saw three students in a school bathroom who possibly possessed a handgun, Gonzalez told reporters Tuesday afternoon. Live in Austin? Shortly after administrators heard the news, the school was immediately placed on lockdown. Gonzalez said additional officers and investigators were called to the high school to investigate. He did not confirm whether the students were male or female. When police interrogated the three students, Gonzalez said they learned that one student had two magazines, one of which had ammunition, in their backpack. He said they did not find a handgun or other weapons on the students. Gonzalez said no shots were fired and students and staff were safe. At this time, the school will remain "on hold" as authorities wrap up and clear the scene. During their investigation, Gonzalez said officers will review surveillance footage. In response to Wednesday's lockdown, the AISD police chief said there will be several officers monitoring the school Thursday. "We have great relationships with the students. We encourage them if they see something, to say something. Something was seen today that triggered this response, and we were able to act quickly," Gonzalez said. This isn't the first incident to occur at Akins High School this year. Gonzalez said there was an isolated stabbing incident involving two students a few months back.
