SAN MATEO, CA — A kitten who was rescued on U.S. Highway 101 in San Mateo and went unclaimed is available for adoption at Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA.
The kitten, a 6-week-old female named Courtney after one of the animal shelter staff members, was stranded between the Peninsula Avenue and Anza Boulevard exits on Nov. 13. After receiving a call about the kitten, Peninsula Humane Society staff rescued her using a sturdy net.
Animal shelter staff believe the kitten was stowed away in a car engine and fell from the vehicle as it was traveling on the highway, according to Buffy Tarbox, the communications manager for the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA.
Courtney was "a little scuffed up and we noticed from road rash," Tarbox said, but she added that Courtney only had superficial wounds and suffered no other injuries.
"Courtney is a charming and friendly kitten and would make the perfect addition to someone looking to add a feline to their home," Tarbox said.
Courtney is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped and has a $120 adoption fee. She can be visited at Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA's Center for Compassion located at 1450 Rollins Road in Burlingame.
