CHATHAM, NJ — The Chatham Borough Police Department has added special push button safety lights to some of the crosswalks throughout the borough. The police department announced the location of the safety lights at certain borough crosswalks on Tuesday, which they said are activated with the push of a button. (It's free) https://patch.com/subscribe These push button and illuminated signs at the crosswalks are located at: North Passaic Avenue and Weston AvenueNorth Passaic Avenue and Yale StreetLafayette Avenue and Chatham StreetVan Doren Avenue and Middle School DriveThe department featured photos showing where the buttons are and demonstrated how to safely enter the crosswalks, in a social media post: The police department explained that the buttons should be pushed first by pedestrians before entering crosswalks. If there are drivers coming, walkers should make eye contact with drivers and ensure that it's safe to begin walking, before they actually start walking into the crosswalk,, the police department wrote. A couple of the intersections pictured, additionally had stand-up signs in the streets, to alert drivers of the crosswalks ahead of them. "Pedestrian safety is a shared responsibility," the Chatham Borough Police Department wrote. "Pedestrians and motorists must both do their part to keep pedestrians safe."
