Tesla Driver Killed In Fiery Crash In The South Bay

REDONDO BEACH, CA — A woman died Wednesday after crashing a Tesla into a light pole, prompting the car to catch on fire, authorities said. The single-vehicle crash happened about 2:08 a.m. Wednesday near Palos Verdes Boulevard and South Catalina Avenue, according to Lt. Shawn Freeman of the Redondo Beach Police Department. The vehicle had two people inside, the woman driving and a woman passenger, Freeman said. Firefighters responded to knock down flames at the vehicle fire, Freeman said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger had minor injuries and was treated by paramedics. The identity of the driver of the vehicle is pending investigation by the coroner's office and notification of next of kin, Freeman said. Investigators with the Redondo Beach Police Department are investigating the factors that contributed to the collision. Roads near Palos Verdes Boulevard and South Catalina Avenue were closed for several hours during the investigation and reopened before 2 p.m. Wednesday.
