CONCORD, NH — More than two dozen Christmas tree growers in New Hampshire and Vermont donated trees to troops abroad as well as military families at home as part of a Department of Agriculture, Markets, and Food effort. Volunteers loaded up more than 450 trees in Bethlehem this week before the trees were to be delivered to military bases in Georgia by FedEx. Nigel Manley, manager of the Rocks Christmas Tree Farm and the chairman of the national Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, the organizer of the program, coordinated the collection this year. The trees were donated by growers as well as regional businesses, schools, and others. Each year, fifth-grade students from the Bethlehem Elementary School help tag and load the trees for shipping. Shawn Jasper, the commissioner of the department, greeted the children and volunteers assembled and thanked them for their good work. During the past 16 years, 260,000 trees have been donated to troops in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and National Guard. Gifts For Outdoors Enthusiasts The holidays are coming up and New Hampshire Fish & Game has some exciting gifts available for the outdoors enthusiasts in your life. The department is hosting its Shop WILD Saturday event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 11 at 11 Hazen Drive. The event features gift certificates, licenses, gift cards, clothing, artwork, and other gifts. Hike Safe cards, too, can be purchased for 2022 for those who like to hike. And, the popular wildlife calendar and magazine, too. The gifts can also be purchased online. For more information about the sale and gift items, visit the Wild NH website, linked here. Catholic School Enrollment Increases Again Enrollment in Catholic schools around New Hampshire continues to grow, according to the Diocese of Manchester. During the 2021 enrollment period, more than 200 new students enrolled in 18 different schools leading to 3,692 enrolled statewide. "This is a resurgence in an interest in Catholic education across the state," Alison Mueller, the director of marketing, enrollment, and development for Catholic schools, said. "We believe that parents are the primary educators of their children, and we serve to partner with them in that education and formation. This type of message resonates with parents." David Thibault, the superintendent of the schools, said the COVID-19 pandemic "disrupted the educational system in 2020" and now, parents have become "more invested in ensuring the best outcomes and educational options" for kids. It was the second year in a row that enrollments increased at the schools. Last year, nearly 500 new students enrolled in Catholic schools. Now, with Educational Freedom Accounts available for middle-class and lower-middle-class families as well as financial aid available from the Children's Scholarship Fund in New Hampshire, there are even more options for families looking for alternative pathways to education via nonpublic and public charter schools. "More families are realizing they do, in fact, have options," Thibault said. Here is everything else going on in New Hampshire right now.
