PHOENIX, AZ — The shooting of a 16-year-old boy at Cesar Chavez High School on Monday was the result of a gun sale gone wrong, according to Phoenix police. The 16-year-old boy was taken to a local hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening, police said. He was still hospitalized in serious condition as of Tuesday afternoon, police said. The 15-year-old that is accused of shooting the older boy has been charged on suspicion of endangerment, aggravated assault and weapons violations. Police plan to recommend charges for the older teen as well. The younger teen fled the scene but police later found and arrested him, according to police. The shooting happened around 3 p.m. Monday, after the older teen is accused of selling a gun to the younger teen in a school bathroom, police said. The older teen soon realized the younger teen had given him fake money, he confronted the younger teen, and was shot. Cesar Chavez High School does not have metal detectors, police said.
