Happy Thursday, Atlanta! Let's get you all caught up to start today off on an informed note. First, today's weather: Mostly sunny and warm. High: 72 Low: 49. Here are the top stories today in Atlanta: Democrat Stacey Abrams announced Wednesday that she is running for Georgia governor a second time. Since her 2018 loss to Brian Kemp in a close race, Abrams' Fair Fight Action organization has been credited with turning Georgia blue in the 2020 presidential election and helping to elect Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff in subsequent runoff elections. "I'm running for governor because opportunity in our state shouldn't be determined by ZIP code, background or access to power," Abrams tweeted. Gatling fled, but officers from multiple agencies flooded the wooded area, locating him Wednesday afternoon after a DeKalb County citizen called 911 about a suspicious individual. Officers exchanged gunfire with Gatling, who was killed in the shootout. The investigators, Ja'rad Hunt and Aaron Jackson, were taken to nearby Emory Hillandale Hospital before being transferred to Grady Memorial Hospital, where both were "doing fine" although one was being prepped for surgery, according to DeKalb Sheriff Melody Maddox . No other law enforcement officers or civilians were injured during the gun battle, Maddox said. Field Training Officer Henry Laxson was one of four people killed, including the shooter and two female victims, said Clayton County police Chief Kevin Roberts. A 12-year-old boy also was shot in the face and hospitalized in critical but stable condition, police said. Another policeman, Officer Alex Chandler suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the hand, according to authorities. Both officers were taken to nearby hospitals, where Laxson later died, police said. Laxson - the third Georgia officer killed in the line of duty in the past month - is the eighth to die in 2021. After beginning his thank-you tour at the Buckhead Library, Dickens made a stop at the corner of Piedmont Avenue and Monroe Drive near Ansley Mall before ending at Publix at Cascade.
