I can't say that I ever aspired to play covers. In fact, a good portion of my energy has been devoted to free improvisation. Lately, however, I've been more concerned with having a versatile repertoire and pushing my chops as a drummer. I haven't done it before, but if you're willing to try with me, here is the idea. Cover bands can focus on what they believe the audience wants, or they can do what they like. I believe an audience will respond to great songs by great artists, without knowing who wrote what. I've been putting on headphones and working through songs from hip hop, metal, alternative, R&B..... The songs that we choose can be radio hits, but they can also be the fan favorites, the best songs that were never singles. Then we bring our own personality to it and let it become something organically. If we landed one regular paid gig somewhere as a result, I'd consider the project a success.
