MARLBOROUGH, MA — A local nonprofit that supports children with autism and related disorders kicked off a fundraising campaign on Tuesday for a new program aimed at adults.
Crossroads Continuum, which operates the Crossroads School in Marlborough for kids between 3 and 22, wants to raise $100,000 for the adult day program. People with special needs typically have to leave public and private school programs after age 22.
The need for an adult program is high now due to the pandemic, according to Crossroads. Some local adult programs have shut down due to coronavirus.
"Our transition coordinator works with families to find the ideal adult program for students before they age out at 22. And they find that programs have six-month to one-year waitlists," Crossroads Program Development and Expansion Director Sarah Palin said in a news release.
Crossroads hopes to launch the new day program by July with room for up to 10 adults, but with the goal of serving up to 30. Adults who participate in the program would be able to go on field trips, use a fitness center and volunteer in the community.
The Crossroads fundraiser coincides with Giving Tuesday, but will continue into December. The fundraiser had topped $30,000 as of Tuesday morning.
