Cereghini sustained serious injuries and was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, where he was listed in critical condition late Monday night, she said. The driver told police Cereghini stepped into the road into the path of the vehicle and leaving no time for the driver to stop or avoid hitting him, Messina said. The driver did not show any signs of impairment and was not physically injured in the crash, Messina said. Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Ryan Fitzgerald is investigating. It is the second incident of a pedestrian being hit in three days in Toms River. On Friday, a Pennsylvania woman was hit as she crossed Hooper Avenue after climbing over the concrete divider. Ebony Shepherd, 34, of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, died Saturday afternoon at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center in New Brunswick of the injuries she suffered when she was hit, Messina said.
