With colder weather and the holidays upon us, it is common for people to be using their furnaces and fireplaces for the first time in several months. The Marion Fire Department wants to ensure that fireplaces and chimneys have been properly maintained prior to their first use.
Dirty chimneys can cause chimney fires. These fires can damage structures, destroy homes, and cause injury or even death.
"Soot can harden on chimney walls as flammable creosote," said Deputy Chief Jason Hansen of the Marion Fire Department. "It is extremely important to have chimneys and flues inspected before the fireplace season begins to ensure they are functioning properly."
The Fire Department also encourages residents to keep a watchful eye on chimneys and flues throughout the season, but especially when using fireplaces for the first few times.

The best way to prevent a chimney fire is to have an annual inspection performed by a certified chimney sweep or qualified agency.
