Press release from the City of San Clemente: 11/29/2021 4:26 PM On this day 43 years ago a medical aid call came out on the radio, in the alley behind N El Camino Real. Officer Richard Steed responded to the call described as a man with a cut to his arm. Officer Steed responded not knowing it would be his last call. Officer Steed was shot two times by the man perceived to be injured and was taken to San Clemente General Hospital, where he received care but did not survive the wounds sustained. Officer Richard Steed is memorialized on a stretch of the 5 freeway southbound through San Clemente as well as at Richard Steed Park.
