A collage art of flowers and shapes from recycled paper
Statement: In constructing the surfaces of her works, Kelly Moeykens uses a collage method in which many flower shapes are hand-cut from recycled paper, then layered with paint, folded with tweezers and then layered atop another. Kelly Moeykens successfully combines a traditional sensibility with her unique vision and personal narrative. Her works explore the complex relationship between color and texture through a labor intensive, time-consuming process.
My works are driven by process, that it is only natural for me to be intrigued by the mediums I use. I am drawn to the tactile experience of it all; there is a physical aspect to interacting with my work that I want to convey with each piece. I want each individual viewer to have a unique emotional response and my work to give rise to their own memories and connections.
Kelly Moeykens is known for her commitment to processes as she creates abstract wall sculptures, paintings and found paper works. Her work is most recognizable for the evocative texture, technique and materials used. She manipulates material over and over again to see what it is capable of becoming, where it might lead, and how it will migrate from an object to something surreal or sublime. Kelly has been featured in many galleries in NY, LA and currently lives and works in Midcoast Maine. While most of Kelly’s work is exhibited outside of Maine, she enjoys feeling a quiet connection to Maine’s art community as she creates her work in Maine and enjoys viewing the work of other respected artists throughout the state.
