Man Charged With Murder In Death Of Portland Woman: DA

PORTLAND, OR —Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced Tuesday that a grand jury has indicted Davonte Arnez Donahue for the alleged murder of Donahue's ex-girlfriend Mariela Gonzalez Rocha, 29, on Nov. 20 or 21. The 29-year-old Donahue, who had reportedly escaped from federal custody earlier this fall, has been charged with murder in the second degree with a firearm — constituting domestic violence, five counts of attempted murder in the first degree with a firearm and one count of felon in possession of a firearm with a firearm, authorities said. According to authorities, on the afternoon of Nov. 20, Gonzalez Rocha called 911 to report that she was being held hostage by her ex-boyfriend in an apartment on SE 171st Avenue in Portland. While on the phone, a man identified himself as "Jason." However, according to reports, Rocha then yelled out the name "Davonte Donahue," before the call ended abruptly. Portland Police officers arrived at the scene and received no answer when they knocked on the apartment door. As officers were evacuating neighbors, shots were fired from inside the apartment toward the front door, police said. No officers were shot, but bullet holes were observed in the front door, and officers withdrew, according to police. After that, more than 30 additional gunshots were heard coming from inside the apartment, police said. The Portland Police Bureau's Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) and its Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) took over the crime scene. CNT attempted to negotiate with Donahue, while SERT tried to enter the residence, even as additional gunshots were heard inside, police said. Early on the morning of Nov. 21, SERT entered the apartment and arrested Donahue. The Portland Fire Bureau located Gonzalez Rocha and determined she was deceased from a gunshot wound, authorities said.
