TUSCALOOSA, AL — A former University of Alabama and U.S. Olympic Team sprinter was shot and killed along with another man Sunday afternoon in Bessemer. Click here to subscribe to our free Tuscaloosa Daily newsletters and breaking news alerts AL.com's Carol Robinson first reported on Monday that Emmit King, 62, was identified as one of the victims, along with another 60-year-old man. King, a graduate of Hueytown High School who also competed at Jefferson State Community College, was the 1983 NCAA 100 meters national champion when he was at the University of Alabama. He would go on to two stints on the U.S. Olympic Relay Team in 1984 and 1988. However, he never competed in a Summer Olympics. Investigators said the shooting occurred at about 3:40 p.m. in front of a house in the 800 block of 22nd Street North in Bessemer. The two men reportedly knew each other and were arguing, before both pulled their guns and began shooting.
