Description

One or possibly two Caregiver / Assistants needed for our 33 year old yogini daughter who has cerebral palsy. (31-33 hours total needed + possibly one overnight shift while our daughter is sleeping. This can be split between 2 people) This is a very fulfilling job for the right person. You don’t not necessarily need prior experience working with a disabled person. You do need to be kind, patient, caring, have good energy, excellent work ethic be very reliable, have great work ethic and be physically strong (I don't mean muscle bound). A good sense of humor helps. Goofiness can be a plus! Our daughter is a very sweet, interesting, ambitious and talented young woman who is very physically challenged with cerebral palsy. She LOVES yoga and practices 4 or 5 times per week. She also enjoys meditation, giving and getting massages, reading poetry, listening to music and hanging out with loved ones. While she is physically active, her disability is such that she can walk only with assistance, has limited use of her hands (so cannot feed herself), and cannot speak verbally, but communicates with either the use of a computer speech device or by using a unique method we call "partner-assisted spelling." This job includes the following tasks: 1. Putting our daughter through a morning stretch routine (if you are doing a morning shift) 2. Taking her out to her sanctuary type yard for a jacuzzi and for sunning if the weather is nice. 3. Feeding her. 4. Some shifts include cooking healthy organic meals (we will train). 5. Occasional light assistance with her computer. 6. Showering her. (For this reason she prefers females only) 7. Taking her to the bathroom. (For this reason also she prefers females only) 8. Some shifts (Saturdays before 6 pm) might include assisting our daughter by positioning her around a mat on the floor when she gives massage. 9. IF you are a massage / bodywork practitioner, possibly giving her a massage. No worries if not. 10. IF you are a yoga practitioner, possibly putting her through a yoga practice. No worries if not. 11. Kitchen clean up 12. Other light clean up such as making the bed and sweeping around the dining table. 13. Driving her places and possibly accompanying her to family/social events. 14 Being a good companion 15. You would also be learning our daughter's communication and utilizing our daughter's communication method so your English must be good. Here is a video made about Eden a couple of years ago when she was doing sculpture: (Just as a note, I have included video so people can learn a bit about our daughter, but she is not seeking an art assistant at this time). It is essential that our person be completely reliable. Our daughter needs a stable environment she can thrive in. We can't afford to have anyone who is flaky in anyway! While no full body lifting is needed for our daughter, you do need to be strong to move our daughter around. Fortunately, our daughter is quite small (weighing approximately 73 lbs) but it still does take strength to move her around. Having your own exercise practice is helpful. If you have any issues with your back, this is NOT a good job for you. Below are times for shifts available. If you can't do them all, that's okay, please let us know what you can do. If you are interested and think you could be the right person and have other times available, please let us know what they are. Mostly we are trying to build the right team and might be able to shift things around. Shifts needing coverage: Sundays 3 or 4pm -10ish pm Mondays 5 pm -10ish pm / or 8 am - 2pm Tuesdays 5 pm -10ish pm / or 8 am - 2pm Thursdays 5 pm-10ish pm / or 8 am - 2pm Saturdays 10- -10ish pm / or 9:30 am - 2pm / or 2 pm - 10pm Sunday/Monday/Thursday shifts could include an overnight if someone wants the extra hours but not necessarily needed. We are looking for one or two people who will be around for a year or more to cover these shifts. Some of these shifts are flexible as you can see below in regard to creating a schedule that would work for you. Once determined the shifts would be set to those agreed upon times. There is too much training involved for someone who will only be around for a few months! *Extra hours often available to cover others. *It is possible if someone needs to travel occasionally or needs to take off that shift trades can be done with other of our daughter's assistants. Someone who worked with our daughter wrote the following and said I should include this in my ads when looking for someone. She said: "I have been working with Eden for almost 3 years, and it has been one of the most fulfilling, rewarding, and worthwhile experiences of my life. I never expected I'd be involved in work like this, and I'm so incredibly thankful a friend introduced me to Eden-what a joy it has been! Eden is absolutely wonderful. She is hilarious, curious, bright, warm hearted, patient, sweet, silly, studious, and incredibly special. I have received just as much, if not more, than I give. Eden's family has embraced me with love and kindness, and the other women who work with Eden have become some of my dearest friends". Another person who worked with our daughter wrote this: I have incredible things to say about working with Eden and her family. I used to live and work with E for 3 whole years in my early twenties. I was house manager and lead trainer for all new aids including yoga. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made mostly because it’s a soul-nourishing position. Like all healthcare jobs, it has challenges but they were ones that have made me into the woman I’ve always wanted to be. Working w E is based on connection, communication, embodiment, and service—all foundations I find to be essential in my work now as a depth + Somatic psychotherapist. To apply: Please send at least a short note that gives us a little sense of who you are and why you think you would be good for this position.
