MILWAUKEE, WI — U.S. Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D) and Ron Johnson (R) of Wisconsin issued a joint statement Saturday calling on outside groups to stop exploiting the SUV attack in Waukesha that killed six people. Darrell Brooks, 39, was charged with five counts of first-degree intentional homicide after he was accused of driving an SUV through marchers in the Waukesha Christmas parade on Nov. 21. Six people were killed, and more than 60 were injured in the incident. A sixth charge is pending. The senators asked outside groups who would use the incident for political purposes to cease and desist. They didn't name any specific groups or people. "We have full confidence in the local officials who responded with extraordinary professionalism, competence, integrity and compassion," Baldwin and Johnson said. Officials should be afforded the respect and support they deserve to work without outside interference, they added. Local officials will begin the healing process in Waukesha by comforting survivors and conducting a thorough investigation and afford the accused a full due process, the senators said.
