BEL AIR, MD — Officials said a fire broke out near Abingdon on Thanksgiving Day, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage. The owner of the house in the 100 block of Grand Oaks Court discovered the fire around 11:45 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 26, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Sprinklers prevented the fire from spreading to the basement, according to investigators, who said both the smoke alarm and sprinkler system activated. One of the homeowners in the area used a garden hose before the fire department arrived. Eight firefighters brought the blaze under control in five minutes, the fire marshal reported. Improperly discarded smoking materials on the back deck caused the fire, investigators said. Nobody was injured, according to officials, who estimated there was about $40,000 in damage.
