YORKVILLE, IL — A Kendall County inmate complained on Friday of finding maggots in the jail's food. After the complaint spread via Facebook, officials at the Kendall County Sheriff's Office said their investigation determined the maggots were actually the skins of pinto beans that fell off during the cooking process. Officials denied Facebook rumors that said jail staff was unresponsive to the complaint of maggot-laden food. The sheriff's office said the complaint was "immediately and thoroughly" investigated, and no maggots were found. "Everyone here at the Sheriff's Office takes the safety and wellbeing of everyone at this facility extremely seriously," Sheriff Dwight Baird said in a statement Saturday. "As such all complaints are thoroughly looked into and corrective action is promptly taken when necessary." The Kendall County Sheriff's Office Correctional Facility is accredited by the American Correctional Association as maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness, Patch previously reported. The county jail met 100 percent of the organization's standards as of February, according to the national group. To ensure food service practices are clean and sanitary, the preparation area is regularly inspected by several organizations, including the Kendall County Health Department, the American Correctional Association and the Illinois Department of Corrections, officials said. "Upon being reported, this complaint was immediately investigated and found to not be what was initially reported," Baird said. "We take great pride in maintaining American Correctional Association accreditation and work hard to ensure our facility, which is regularly inspected, meets the high ACA standards."
