TEMECULA, CA — The pilot of a small airplane that crashed in a field southeast of French Valley Airport in Temecula last week has been identified as a Murrieta resident by the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner's Bureau. Marshal Whatley, 48, died in the crash involving the single-engine Zodiac 601XL that he was piloting on November 23. The aircraft went down in a field around 10:35 a.m. near the 32000 block of Everview Terrace. Whatley, who was the only person on board, was killed in the wreckage. According to his online biography, Whatley was involved in the aviation industry since the age of 17. He was a product manager for Microsoft and held an MBA in business administration. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
