BURBANK, IL — Chicago's gun violence claimed the life of a Burbank teen Wednesday afternoon. Matthew Miller-Hernandez, 15, was waiting for a ride-share in the city's Heart of Italy neighborhood when he was fatally shot, Chicago police said. The teen was a sophomore at Reavis High School. Around 6:30 p.m. Nov. 24, police said Miller-Hernandez was standing on the sidewalk in the 2500 block of South Blue Island with a group of people waiting for a ride-share. A vehicle pulled up, and someone inside the vehicle engaged the group in a conversation. Police said the occupant of the vehicle began firing shots, hitting Miller-Hernandez in the chest and both shoulders. The teen was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No one is in custody. Area 4 detectives are investigating. Miller-Hernandez's death was announced on Reavis High School's Facebook page. "Matt was a sophomore student who was unfortunately caught in the middle of some gun violence while in Chicago," Reavis principal Dan Riordan said in a statement. "We all grieve the loss of one of our Rams during a time that is supposed to be cheerful and full of gratitude. We are reminded that every day is a gift and to never take tomorrow for granted." Counseling services will be available to students and staff when they return to school on Monday, officials said.
