AURORA, IL — Have things you've been meaning to get rid of but haven't found the time? Kane County is hosting a special recycling event outside regular business hours at Aurora's new recycling center from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Launched in June, the recycling center, located at 911 N. Lake St., is open five days a week year-round. Typically open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, the special event will give people who can't typically make it during normal hours a chance to recycle on the weekend. Recyclable items that will be accepted include: ElectronicsBooksClothingShoesAppliancesScrap metalPaperCardboardShredded paperAerosol productsPropane canisters Shredded paper should be recycled in paper bags that are stapled shut, and only small camp-sized cans of propane are accepted. When it comes to clothing and shoes, the items can be in any condition as long as they're clean, since they'll be reused or recycled, Kane County Recycles said in a news release. Dropping off certain items does have a cost at the facility. Guests will be charged a $25 fee to recycle TVs or computers with screens under 21 inches — measured diagonally — and $35 if screens are larger than 21 inches. There's a $1-per-can fee for recycling aerosol cans, and $3.50-per-canister fee for propane. Everything else is free to recycle. For a full list of what can be dropped off, information can be found on the Kane County Connects website. Data stored on computer hard drives will be completely erased or destroyed under the highest security, officials said.
