RIVERHEAD, NY — A man charged with burglary this week after smashing in the glass at Lowe's in Riverhead is facing an additional charge, police said. Riverhead Police said Terry Smith, 58, was arrested after an incident at Lowe's on Old Country Road on Nov. 10; Smith was charged with one count of third-degree grand larceny, a felony, police said. Smith was already in police custody after being charged with third-degree burglary, after an incident that took place on Friday, also at Lowe's Home Improvement, police said. On Friday at 4:57 a.m., a manager from the Riverhead Lowe's location contacted police and said when reporting for work, he found the glass broken out in two of the front doors, authorities said. Officers responded and conducted a search of the interior of the store; however, nothing inside appeared out of order, police said. The Riverhead Police Department's detective division was notified and a preliminary investigation was conducted at the scene, including a review of the surveillance system, police said. The footage showed that at 11:20 p.m. the night before, Smith used a large piece of steel to smash out the front glass, police said. He then entered the location, selected assorted tools from the shelves and left the store on foot, police said. The initial alarm activation had not been reported to police by the alarm company, police said. Based on information obtained from patrol officers, Smith was subsequently located at the Greenview Motel a short time later, police said. Smith was placed under arrest and transported to the Riverhead Police Department, where he was processed on the charge of third-degree burglary and held pending arraignment, police said. Smith was held overnight for arraignment in Riverhead Justice Court on the new charge, police said.
