LSO will be commemorating the work of Violence Transformed with an All Beethoven Concert. Violence Transformed, an initiative of the Public Health Advocacy Institute at Northeastern University School of Law, is an annual series of visual and performing arts events celebrating the power of art to confront, challenge and mediate violence. Drawing upon the creative energies of artists throughout New England, Violence Transformed documents the ways in which our communities harness art's potential to foster social justice and address race- and income-related healthcare inequities in vulnerable communities. About the Longwood Symphony Orchestra The Longwood Symphony Orchestra is a volunteer non-profit orchestra based in Boston, MA and composed of medical professionals. Their concerts act as fundraisers for health-related non-profit organizations. It was founded in 1982 by members of the Harvard Medical School community. More about the concert and our deep appreciation for your joining us The concert will feature the music of Ludwig Van Beethoven (1770-1827) whose work truly transformed Western music in the early 19th Century by building a bridge between the Classical period, as exemplified by composers such as Hayden and Mozart, to the Romantic period and composers ranging from Brahms to Mahler. Many have seen this as a transition from an intellectual aesthetic to a more personal and emotional form of artistic expression. The two works featured in this program, Beethoven’s Symphony #2 and Piano Concerto #3, mark some of his final and finest compositions in the Classical tradition as he prepared to embark on a new musical path, hints of which can be heard in these two works. They are closely associated and, in fact, premiered together on April 5, 1803.
