Hello, people of Des Moines! It's me again, Katarina Betterton, your host of the Des Moines Daily. First, today's weather: Breezy in the afternoon. High: 54 Low: 28. Here are the top stories in Des Moines today: Despite snowflakes and a wind chill of 0 degrees, more than 4,700 runners showed up with great enthusiasm for the Des Moines Turkey Trot Thursday morning. After last year's virtual 5K event, the in-person attendance for the 2021 edition was the highest in the Trot's seven-year history. The race drew runners from 42 states on a 3.1-mile course designed to showcase the best of downtown Des Moines, including the courthouse, the Capitol Complex, Botanical Garden, and more. (KCCI Des Moines) Although the first responders on duty at Des Moines Fire Department Station One on Thursday couldn't spend Thanksgiving with their loved ones, this family-like unit had a Thanksgiving feast of their own, which was full of good food and laughs. Those good times are just fleeting moments between calls, many of which were for small kitchen fires in the homes of ambitious home chefs preparing their holiday feasts. But their passion to help the community no matter what the circumstance has kept them growing, despite the challenges of two pandemic holiday seasons. (KCCI Des Moines) The Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden kicked off its Dome After Dark event last night with unique light displays throughout the conservatory and refreshments for attendees. The event runs every Friday through Feb. 25, 2022 from 6 to 9 p.m., and guests are encouraged to pre-purchase tickets. (Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden)Des Moines Parks and Recreation is partnering with the U.S. Marine Corps this holiday season for a Toys for Tots toy collection. Families have until Tuesday, Nov. 30 to register their child to receive a gift from either the Fourmile Community Recreation Center (3711 Easton Blvd.) or the Pioneer Columbus Community Recreation Center (2100 SE 5th St.). Call either recreation center during regular business hours or go online to register. Gift pick-up occurs between Dec. 13 and Dec. 15 from 12 to 8 p.m. at whichever location you signed up.
