Learn about the ancient gardening technique of planting by the astrological signs with Rebecca Beyer.
Join us for a look at the history of planting by the astrological signs in Appalachia. Though antiquated, this interesting historical practice held sway, and still does, throughout the mountain South. We will cover how this practice migrated to and fully blossomed in the region, and how you can live more closely to the Earth by employing this ancient gardening technique yourself! Participants will receive an informative PDF from the instructor and seed packets so they can start planting by the signs in the spring of 2022!
Cost: $35 for museum members, $45 for non-members. Some fees apply.
Location: Black Mountain Public Library- Education Room, 105 N Dougherty St, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
Covid Protocol: This event will take place indoors. Participants are required to wear masks covering the nose and mouth and to distance during the event. Anyone experiencing symptoms of covid-19 or experiencing a possible risk of exposure is asked to stay safe and stay at home!
About the Instructor: Rebecca Beyer writes about and researches Appalachian Folk Magic, Traditional Witchcraft, Primitive Skills, Homesteading, Foraging, Appalachian Ethnobotany and Folk Ways. She holds a B.S. in Plant and Soil Science from the University of Vermont and an M.A. Appalachian Studies and Sustainability from Appalachian State University. She lives in Western North Carolina, where she runs the Blood and Spicebush School of Old Craft and co-facilitates the Sassafras School of Appalachian Plantcraft.
Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center has served the western North Carolina community since 1989 as Buncombe County’s primary museum of general, local history.
