ORLAND PARK, IL — The Carl Sandburg High School boys cross country team won its first state title since 2015 earlier this month at the Illinois High School Association state championships.
The win for the Eagles came Nov. 6 at the Class 3A state championships in Peoria. Top finishes included senior Declan Tunney, Brock Rice, Sean Marquardt, Grant Giblin and Trent Anderson, for a winning total of 130 points.
Hinsdale Central trailed the No. 1 seeded team with 175 points.
Tunney, Rice and Marquardt were named all-state as well. According to school officials, Tunney's time was the fifth fastest in school history for the course at Detweiller Park.
The win is the school's first championship win across any sport since 2015. Prior to then, Sandburg teams had collected almost 20 top finishes.
School officials said in a social media statement that alumni surprised the 2021 team in Peoria to cheer them on.
