GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones announced the appointment of Annamaria McCarthy as interim assistant principal at Hamilton Avenue School, effective Dec. 6. McCarthy replaces Trudi Durrell, who accepted a position in another school district closer to her home. McCarthy will support the entire Hamilton Avenue community, assisting in the development and achievement of school goals and objectives, while advocating on behalf of all students, the district said in a news release Tuesday. "I am excited and grateful to step into the role of assistant principal at Hamilton Avenue School," McCarthy said in a news release. "I am honored to join Greenwich Public Schools and I look forward to supporting such a strong community of staff, students, and families." Jones said McCarthy's experience as a dual language educator and her commitment to students "will fit seamlessly" into Hamilton Avenue School, which is the district's first Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics (STEM) magnet school. "GPS has a proud legacy of cultivating high-performing administrators," Jones added. McCarthy comes to Greenwich with more than right years of educational experience from the Fair Haven K-8 School in New Haven. Beginning in September of 2013, she served as a dual language kindergarten teacher where she instructed a diverse population of students through a multi-tiered instructional model. During the 2020-2021 school year, McCarthy held an administrative internship, chaired multiple committees and created and implemented curriculum aligned with district standards. "I am delighted that Ms. McCarthy will be joining the Hamilton Avenue School learning community," Principal Dr. Shanta Smith said in a news release. "I look forward to partnering with her as we work together with students, staff, and families to build upon our school's collective efforts to promote personalized learning, enhance our magnet school theme, and accelerate student learning." McCarthy has a bachelor's degree in sociology, a master's in teaching, a Connecticut 092 Administration & Supervision Certificate, and a Sixth Year Diploma in education leadership from Quinnipiac University.
