Press release from the City of Ames: 11/23/2021 3:00 PM The Ames Police Department is pleased to announce the promotion of Lieutenant Dan Walter to Police Commander effective Dec. 1. Walter will fill the vacancy left by former Commander Geoff Huff who was promoted to Chief of Police on July 1. Walter joined the Ames Police Department in 2004 and was promoted to Sergeant in 2009. In 2013, he was named Lieutenant. The Ames Police Department has two Commanders who may serve as Acting Police Chief when assigned. Jason Tuttle serves as the other Police Commander. Police Commanders lead and supervise the police patrol and investigation divisions. Among other duties, they provide leadership in strategic planning, quality assurance, quantitative analysis, decision making, and departmental research and evaluation activities. Walter has a master's degree from St. Ambrose University, with an undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa. He is currently serving in the Army Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel. "We are excited to welcome Dan to this new leadership position," said Police Chief Geoff Huff. "The Ames Police Department takes seriously its commitment to enhancing the quality of life of our residents through public safety.
