CONCORD, NH — Are you are skier? Are you ready for the season? Well, so is Gunstock. The Gunstock Mountain Resort will open on Dec. 10 for the winter 2021-2022 skiing season with new snowmaking capacity and top to bottom skiing and riding for the first time in two decades. Tubing will begin on Dec. with 10 lanes. The facility, which is owned by Belknap County, has added 30 new snow guns, updated piping, and purchased Snowright software which allows the grooming team to monitor snowmaking and conditions. There is also a new rental building and expanded parking spaces. "With new technology and innovation," Tom Day, the facility's president and general manager, said, "we are able to increase the capacity of our snowmaking efforts across the mountain this winter, allowing us to expand open terrain in the early season." Eversource, BBB Warn Of Scams New Hampshire's largest utility is teaming up with a consumer resource to fight scammers during the winter months. Eversource and the Better Business Bureau are working together to fight scams after seeing a spike in spoofs, including COVID-19-related ripoffs. "These scammers — often sounding legitimate and quite convincing — may threaten to shut off electric service immediately unless instant payment is made, sometimes with a prepaid debit card, which should be a red flag," Penni Conner, an Eversource executive vice president of customer experience and energy strategy, said. "Scammers are constantly changing their tactics to take advantage of unsuspecting customers and prey on people when they feel most vulnerable, like during the holidays. That's why we're warning customers to beware — if they get a call or text and something doesn't seem right — don't panic and don't pay and remember — we will never threaten to disconnect service or demand instant payment over the phone." Some are phishing scams like text messages requesting personal information while others are overpayment scams — where the scammers tell a utility customer they have overpaid on their bill and request personal information like a bank account number or credit card so they can be issued a refund. "A common tactic scammers use is creating fear and panic to trick utility customers into making a hasty payment, or providing sensitive personal information," Robert Shomphe, the Better Business Bureau New Hampshire president and CEO, said. "Impostors will typically contact customers with a telephone call claiming to be a representative from the utility company. Often, they will claim payment is overdue and that the utility will shut off power within the hour if the bill is not paid immediately. We want to make sure consumers know how to spot the red flags of utility scams so that they can protect themselves if they're targeted. Customers should never give out their personal information or utility account information unless they have initiated the call and know the identity of the company they are speaking with. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call your utility back directly." Customers are reminded that neither Eversource nor other utilities will demand instant payment over the phone and do not require pre-paid debit cards for payment. Personal financial information should never be given to anyone unsolicited on the phone. Customers who are scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment will receive written notices about how to resolve accounts.
