CONCORD, NH — We are all just hours away from what has historically been considered the busiest travel weekend of the year — although some of you may already be out and about. When traveling to and from the Granite State, New Hampshire State Police would like you to travel safely. "Prevention and saving lives are always our top priorities and we need everyone's assistance and attentiveness during this busy holiday season," Major Michael Commerford of the NHSP. "We are asking for the public's help in partnering to keep our roadways safe while enjoying the holiday." Traffic-related fatalities and injuries increase during the holiday season. But taking a bit more time and planning when traveling can do a lot to make everyone safer. State police are recommending to first, do not drive impaired: Plan ahead; designate a sober driver or hand over your keys to someone else; call a taxi, driver service, or friend or family member to pick you up; or use a sober ride program, if available. Next: Do not drive while distracted — put down the cellphone and other electronic devices and keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road in an effort to remain focused at all time. And lastly, wear seatbelts and obey the speed limit. "On behalf of Col. Nathan Noyes and the men and women of the New Hampshire Sate Police," he said. "Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving. Best Buddy Champion For NH Ian Clemence-Schreiner has been named Best Buddies New Hampshire Champion of the Year. Clemence-Schreiner was named champion on Saturday by raising money as well as building awareness for the org which works to promote friendships, jobs, leadership development, and inclusive living for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. "I am the 2021 Best Buddies New Hampshire Champion of the year and I am the man," he wrote in a note on Facebook, while thanking a number of his supporters who helped him raise around $37,000 for young people with cognitive and physical disabilities. Bobby Marcotte of Tuckaway Tavern in Raymond, served as his campaign manager and called it an honor to help him. "Dude, you are an inspiration," Marcotte said on Facebook, tagging Clemence-Schreiner. "Your energy is infectious (and) unrelenting. You are one of the most down-to-earth, funny, focused, most interesting humans I've ever known and I'm so very proud to not only call you my buddy, my champion but one of my very best friends in the world." Videos from the event were posted on Facebook, linked here. For more information about Best Buddies, visit this link. Operation Santa Claus Short On Donations Operation Santa Claus, the holiday charitable effort by SEA/SEIU Local 1984, the state employee's union, which serves around 3,000 children each year, is hundreds of donations short for 2021. According to Philip Burt, a coordinator, there are nearly 200 families, with children aged 2 to 6, who are still in need of sponsorships. Another 250 unsponsored teenagers, living in placement or foster care, who do not need clothing or other items, are also in need of gifts. The organization is requesting gift cards or cash donations for gift cards for the teens. Burt said while the effort is short, a lot of sponsors have really come through for the children of New Hampshire. However, one last push is needed.
