The AACC Center Manager provides leadership, direction and a cohesive vision to the Anchorage Animal Care & Control (AACC) Center, the open-admission animal shelter of the Municipality of Anchorage. This position manages and oversees all aspects of the Center including day-to-day operations, animal care and control, staff management, contractual compliance, and managing outside relationships. The AACC Center Manager will maintain a safe, healthy environment for animals, staff and the public and create a team environment dedicated to the success of the center. ABOUT US The Municipality of Anchorage has contracted Denali Universal Services to operate all aspects of AACC since 1999. The shelter has an annual intake of 4,500-4,800 domestic animals. AACC's programs include partnerships with private rescue groups to save lives; an active public relations program and social media presence; outreach programs such as the Pet Food Bank, Shelter Cat Storytime, and dog-bite prevention program for elementary school students; post-adoption behavior support; and foster and volunteer programs. AACC enforces Anchorage Municipal Code Title 17 to ensure public safety and the humane care of animals. Animal Control Officers respond to calls throughout the entire Municipality of Anchorage which encompasses nearly 2,000 square miles and is home to just under 300,000 residents. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS • Bachelor’s Degree • Five (5) years of paid work experience in animal care and control • At least two (2) years of supervisory or leadership experience in an animal shelter, sanctuary and/or pet adoption center environment. • Must be able to pass company’s pre-employment screens including a criminal background check, drug test, and physical/FCE (if applicable). • Strong interpersonal skills for management of staff, volunteers, vendors/contractors and interfacing with the public • Exceptional leadership skills including being a self-starter, strong facilitator and organizer, and a high level of written and verbal communication skills. • Able to work weekends and holidays, as needed PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (not required) • Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) • Must be able to obtain DEA Controlled Substance Certificate upon hire • Knowledgeable in animal behavior; health and well-being that includes nutritional needs; resources of where to seek information; knowledge of common animal diseases, treatments and vaccinations ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Provide leadership and manage all aspects of AACC operations, programs and services. Maintain compliance with the Animal Control Contract, AMC Title 17. • Develop, review and assess policies, processes, programs, and work within the organization to make needed changes that meet the needs of the animals and the community. • Program Management: oversee programs including, but not limited to, animal care and control, customer service, adoptions, surrender prevention, volunteer, foster, and public relations. Establish, implement and achieve program goals and objectives to accomplish an effective animal control program. Maintain required documentation and reports. • Public Relations: Serve as Liaison with various Municipality of Anchorage agencies as needed. Work cooperatively with local partners, volunteers, advocates, fosters, rescues and other stakeholders to strategically solve issues within the Anchorage municipality. Coordinate and respond to the Department of Health & Human Services requests. • Staff Management: oversee and provide leadership to the AACC Center staff. This includes, providing a positive example regarding work ethic, professionalism, knowledge of policies/procedures, interpersonal interactions and mutual respect; addressing performance issues effectively through coaching, training, and working with HR and DUS senior management to address corrective action and other employee relations issues. • Manage Disaster Response: serve as point of contact to MOA Health Department. Responsible to set up and oversee temporary pet shelters; including staffing and any other necessary contract services during emergency response situations. • Budget: Assist with planning and budgeting. Analyze data and make adjustments to processes and programs to achieve organizational goals. • Develop effective working relationships with other related groups or agencies such as veterinarians, animal groups, Animal Control Advisory Board, Anchorage Police Department, the local media, etc. Direct community outreach and education programs to encourage positive public relations related to AACC. • Keep abreast of the latest developments in animal care to improve programs and services. • Follow all local, state and federal laws with regard to animal housing, care, admission, disposition, and employee work related matters. Ensure compliance with contractual agreements. • Legal Resource: provide court testimony and/or professional opinion with attorneys in cruelty cases; discuss Title 17 civil with MOA attorneys; and represent and prepare documents for AACC involving animal cruelty cases BENEFITS Full-time regular employees have the opportunity to enroll in our health insurance (medical/dental/vision), life insurance, 401k retirement and short-term disability plans. WORKING ENVIRONMENT Will be required to work in a noisy, odorous environment; interact with the public in emotional and occasionally hostile situations; care for and handle all animals in a safe, effective and humane manner. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work requires routine walking, standing, and bending. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand or walk frequently for varying lengths of time. The employee is occasionally required to participate in activities, which may require significant lifting, moving, and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Applicants will be required to successfully complete a post-offer pre-hire physical and functional capacity exam.
