The reason there are a lot of cover bands is because that is what this local music market wants and pays for. If there was a market for original music there would be more clubs catering to that. I have done both and both are cool in their own way. Unfortunately in this area there is very little consumer interest in original music. To be successful in the original space you have to choose a different route. There is a fairly robust online market for original music. There are other cities where original music works (NY,LA, Nashville,Austin,Memphis). You have to be a really good musician though top 1%. Then if you are good looking, young, and in the right place at the right time you can make some money. So if you are creative and feel compelled to play original music you must adapt yourself to that business. Here though this is not your place and it is unlikely no matter how cool your band is you will be able to create a market and subsequently displace the cover bands. Even the clubs that supported original stuff are almost all gone now because they couldn’t monetize your product in this market.(Volume 11, Deep South, Southland). This is sad, but music evolves just like everything else. Maybe in the future there will be a push back to local original live music. It’s unlikely though so rock on but understand this is a market driven commodity.
