Happy Wednesday, people of Roanoke! Here's everything you need to know going on in town today. First, today's weather: Abundant sunshine and warmer. High: 52 Low: 32. Here are the top stories today in Roanoke: 72 years ago from Tuesday, Mill Mountain Star lit up the Roanoke skyline for the first time! The iconic landmark was originally created as a Christmas decoration for the holiday shopping season in 1949. People loved it so much that it became a popular attraction and even gave Roanoke the nickname Star City. It's now the largest, free-standing, man-made, illuminated star in the world. RCPS is dealing with a staffing shortage, specifically special education teachers, which is why the school board decided to offer a $2,300 stipend for future and current special ed teachers. All school employees received a $1,200 appreciation bonus, meaning special ed teachers received that bonus on top of the $2,300 stipend. This is causing some teachers to feel devalued.
