Good Tuesday morning Connecticut, It is very cold today, and it's not going to warm up until Thanksgiving Day, and even that warm up will be very brief. The forecast calls for dry weather but chilly, except for low 50s on Thursday. 2 killed in Connecticut crash as state officials raise concern over alarming trend On Monday, state officials shared alarming data that traffic-related fatalities in Connecticut are up nearly 16 percent from a year ago. As of Nov. 12, there have been 290 traffic related deaths in Connecticut, up from 257 in 2020, and 216 in 2019. "If you think it seems more dangerous out on Connecticut's highways and interstates lately, you're right," said Connecticut Department of Transportation commissioner Joseph Giulietti. "It is a real crisis. It's happening here, and it's happening across the country. We are seeing an unprecedented increase in fatalities." And on Monday afternoon, state police confirmed to WTNH News 8 that two people were killed in a crash in Windham on Route 6 around 12:30 p.m. A third person was seriously injured. That accident remains under investigation. The names of the victims has not yet been released. State officials announced prior to the double-fatal accident that there will be increased state police patrols on the highways this entire holiday week in an effort to help safeguard the roads. On a national level, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an estimated 20,160 people died in motor vehicle crashes in the first half of 2021, up 18.4 percent over 2020. That's the largest number of projected fatalities in that time period since 2006. The recent rise in traffic deaths is likely due to a variety of reasons, starting with the increase in speeding during the COVID-19 pandemic, officials said. Carjacking incident under investigation A carjacking and a two vehicle crash are both under investigation in Meriden, according to media reports, including Hearst Connecticut. A carjacking was reported on Bee Street in town and a major crash was reported on Interstate 691, Hearst CT reports. Authorities have said both incidents are under investigation. (Read more at Hearst CT). Motorist shot at car, police say In Newington, police are investigating a report that a motorist shot at another car on the Berlin Turnpike Monday, WTNH News 8 reports. The incident occurred Monday night. Police found several shell casings in the road. The suspect remains at-large. (Read more at News 8). Teen seriously injured in motorcycle crash, police say A 17-year-old motorcyclist suffered potentially life-threatening injuries in an accident in Stamford late Monday, according to Hearst Connecticut. Police said the teen's motorcycle was involved in an accident with a pickup truck. (Read more at Hearst Connecticut).
