Here are the top stories in Burlington today: Vermont lawmakers on Monday grudgingly approved a bill to let individual cities and towns pass temporary mask mandates, but only after criticizing Governor Phil Scott for giving them the choice to do little else. The bill passed the special legislative session by wide margins, but many lawmakers who voted for it said they did so only because Scott continued to oppose the broader mask mandate they preferred. Under the new law, which goes into effect Nov. 29 through Apr. 30, city councils and select boards can now mandate facial coverings be worn inside public and private buildings that are open to the public. (Seven Days)Vermont is starting to see more Afghan refugees arrive at Burlington International Airport after they were delayed at military bases for weeks. Several families are scheduled to arrive this week; in total, Vermont will welcome 100 new refugees, each arriving after months of escalating conflict in Afghanistan. State Refugee Director Tracy Dolan said the holdup for refugees at military bases has been caused in large part by the sheer amount of people looking to come to the U.S. (NEWS10 ABC)The Burlington International Airport is preparing for a surge of travelers for the upcoming holiday. From a visual standpoint, the airport looks the same as last year, with reminders about wearing a mask and not traveling while sick.
