By Steve Burger, WNIN November 23, 2021 Evansville's skyline will look much different to start the week for many downtown workers Monday. It had stood as the tallest building in Evansville for over 50 years. And in exactly 26 seconds, it was a heap of rubble. After weeks of preparation the 420 Main Building, the former headquarters of Old National Bank, came down as Mayor Lloyd Winnecke put it, "It happened the way they said it would." In a surreal setting at Fifth and Vine Streets downtown, the dust cloud from the implosion rolled over the media, some construction employees and their families just as the Old Courthouse clock chimed 7am. Fifth Street will be open in a week and final cleanup of the site is due for completion by the end of January. This Sunday, a major part of Evansville's skyline will be brought down in an implosion of the 420 Main Building. The demolition contractor held a news conference this afternoon (Friday) to talk about the project. The incident forced officials to delay school in Mt. Vernon Tuesday. Evansville police are investigating a murder on the city's Southeast Side. WNIN is the NPR/PBS affiliate in Evansville, Indiana.
