Portland Homeless: City Picks West Side For New Homeless Village

PORTLAND, OR — Portland has hard some obstacles getting its Safe Rest Village program off the ground. Soon after announcing its first three choices, the city had to back off the plan because one of the sites was located on the flood plain. City Commissioner Dan Ryan, who is overseeing the Safe Rest Village program, announced that a replacement site has been found. Ryan announced that a village will be built at the former Jerome Sears Army Reserve Center on Southwest Multnomah Village. Live in Portland? The village, which will consist of 60 small home pods, will provide people with a place to sleep as well as basic services such as showers and access to things like behavioral health services. The site is also near a bus stop and a Safeway supermarket. "I am so proud of our Safe Rest Villages team," Ryan said. "Our team continues to overcome obstacles, site these vital villages, and move forward on this work that will benefit all Portlanders." The other two sites are at the Menlo Park Park and Ride in East Portland and Southwest Naito Parkway.
