SMITHTOWN, NY — A United States Air Force member deployed in the Middle East has turned to Smithtown-based Guardians of Rescue for help relocating a cat he met while deployed back home to the U.S. with him. Staff Sergeant Madd, whose deployment is coming to a close, is seeking to bring Stan the cat home with him. Guardians of Rescue needs help and donations from the public to make it happen. "We first met this cat when he hung around the barracks and I started feeding him," Staff Sergeant Madd said via news release. "He's great with people, plays well, and I have been taking care of him. We've all gotten pretty close to him, and my family is excited for Stan to become the newest member if we can get him to safety in the U.S." For those who would like to donate to help Sgt. Madd rescue Stan, you can do so on the Guardians of Rescue website. Guardians of Rescue helps military members relocate the pets they rescue while deployed. "During deployment, the animals [military members] rescue bring them a lot of comfort when they are so far from home," Guardians of Rescue stated. "They form a strong bond and can't fathom the idea of leaving them behind in risky conditions when it's time for them to head back to the U.S." Stan was skinny and dirty and would hang around the mess hall eating scraps, according to the organization. He would also seek shelter, trying to get relief from the 120-degree temperatures. This was until Staff Sgt. Madd slowly made friends with him. He began giving the cat water and food, and soon he could say "Stan," and the cat would come running. The military members were amazed, the rescue wrote. While the two of them began growing closer together, Staff Sgt. Madd was also sending pictures and videos of Stan back home. Once he heard his deployment was over, he was heartbroken at the thought of leaving Stan behind. Making getting Stan relocated to the U.S. his last mission, he has reached out to Guardians of Rescue for assistance with the relocation process. "We are calling on all cat lovers to help this cute little guy make his way back to the Midwest, where he can live out his life in happiness and safety," said Robert Misseri, president and co-founder of Guardians of Rescue. "We are always happy to help our military members with pet rescues, but we can't do it without the support of the community." Guardians of Rescue provides assistance to animals out on the streets and investigates animal cruelty cases. It is located in Smithtown, but it helps animals in many places around the country. It is also instrumental in helping military members with their pets.
