This course will provide information from multiple disciplines involved in the care and rehabilitation of patients with a spinal cord injury
Information gained from this course will be of use to occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech and language pathologists, recreational therapists, social workers, case managers and nursing professionals. The course aims to empower professionals with knowledge and understanding of the medical management of a patient with a spinal cord injury including complications of DVTs, spasticity, orthostatic hypotension and autonomic dysreflexia. Professionals will learn about the ASIA impairment scale and better understand the prognosis for recovery after incurring a SCI. With the information presented in this course, staff will be able to provide more comprehensive and effective care for the patient with neurogenic bowel and bladder as well as strategies for regaining control of their patient’s bowel and bladder function. Professionals will also learn about risk factors for pressure ulcer development and optimal positioning in both a bed and chair. Rehabilitation of the respiratory system for SCI patients will be discussed including learning about primary vs accessory breathing dynamics and the importance of glottic closure for supporting core strengthening. After this course, professionals will be able to implement ADL and IADL adaptive strategies and appropriate treatment interventions for various functional mobility impairments.
