The Piñata is a FUSION OF TRADITIONS! The celebration of the posadas and piñatas is a syncretism of indigenous Mexican heritage and world traditions introduced during colonization. On December, the Mexica celebrated the Panquetzaliztli the winter solstice as the birth of Huitzilopochtli, the god of war and the sun. During the Panquetzaliztli, people made a clay pot which was decorated with colorful items. It was then broken with a stick, and the prizes would fall as an offering to the god’s image.
Ancient Chinese traditions also celebrated the welcoming of the new year by filling a clay pot with seeds.
Marco Polo, the explorer took this Chinese tradition to Europe. Italy welcomed it with a “pignatta” which means earthenware cooking pot and was given a religious sense.
