Feeling that many major artists of the silent film era were being forgotten, Tom Barnes began screening movies from his own collection under the name “Retroformat” for the American Cinematheque in Hollywood’s Egyptian Theater in late 2009, with Cliff Retallick also contributing his time and talent. By the time the Egyptian Theater closed its doors due to Covid, the series had celebrated its tenth anniversary. Since becoming its own nonprofit in 2019, Retroformat Silent Films has pursued its mission of educating and creating enthusiasm about the art of silent film through sold out screenings at venues like the Egyptian Theatre, the Hollywood Legion Theater and the Old Town Music Hall, through webcasts and even free silent movie screenings in 6th, 7th and 8th grade public school classrooms. Their Board of Directors includes internationally renowned filmmakers Allison Anders and Alexander Payne. We will hear the story of how Retroformat came to be, and Cliff Retallick will improvise live music for a program of eclectic silent films especially selected for the Breakfast Club, presented on real film, and featuring favorites like Charlie Chaplin, Mabel Normand and more. ABOUT THE CLUB: Founded in 1925, the Los Angeles Breakfast Club still thrives with food, friendship, and fun. Our meetings are held in our clubhouse, Friendship Auditorium, located at 3201 Riverside Drive, near the corner of Los Feliz Boulevard, in Griffith Park. Best described as a variety show, attendees enjoy a catered breakfast, silly songs, club traditions, and an interesting presentation from a guest speaker. https://retroformat.eventbrite.com TICKETS: Sales on Eventbrite close 48 hours before breakfast.
