MERIDEN, CT — A man has been sentenced to prison for trafficking cocaine in Connecticut, according to a statement from Leonard C Boyle, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut. Roberto Muniz, 37, of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, was sentenced to 30 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Muniz was sentenced for his role in trafficking cocaine from Puerto Rico to Connecticut via US Mail, prosecutors said. Between July and December 2018, law enforcement intercepted and seized five suspect parcels that were being mailed to addresses in Bristol, Meriden, and Burlington, and in Worcester, MA. All five of the suspect parcels contained multiple kilogram-sized bricks of cocaine. Investigators found Miguel Freytes, Marcos Mendez, Omar Mendez, and others picking up or attempting to pick up parcels that had been seized. The investigation revealed that the cocaine was being sent from Puerto Rico by Muniz and others, according to prosecutors. Investigators arrested several people with alleged ties to the drug trafficking scheme and seized about 2.5 kilograms of cocaine, items used to process and package drugs, and more than $150,000 in cash Jan. 15, 2019. Muniz was arrested in Puerto Rico at that time as well. He pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and other crimes July 20, 2020.
