PITTSBURGH, PA — No, the franchise will not be leaving town. Boston already has an NHL team. But a Boston conglomerate appears poised to soon complete the purchase of your beloved Pittsburgh Penguins.
Fenway Sports Group, which owns the Boston Red Sox and is principally owned by billionaire John Henry, apparently will be the new majority owner of the Pens. Current co-owner and former Pens superstar Mario Lemieux is expected to retain a small ownership stake.
The Pens current management team is expected to remain in place, especially coach Mike Sullivan. Do you really think a Boston-based group would fire a guy named Sullivan?
