OSWEGO, IL — Twenty veterans from the Fox River Valley were awarded handmade quilts by representatives of the Land of Lincoln Quilts of Valor during the Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club meeting at Oswego American Legion post Nov. 18. Quilts of Valor are quilted, not tied, by volunteers using donated materials and awarded to veterans as a way to thank them for their "service, sacrifice and valor in serving our nation," according to the national Quilts of Valor Foundation. The organization, started in 2004, has comforted 286,178 people as of Oct. 31. "These Veterans vowed to lay down their lives for you and me, no questions asked," former Executive Director Ann Rehbein said on the foundation's website. "We cannot judge what being 'touched by war' means to a Veteran. It will be different for each one, no matter where or when they served." The recent event honored veterans from places including Aurora, Oswego, Montgomery and Yorkville. Priscilla Laubscher, an Oswego resident and 21-year veteran of the Air Force and Navy, was among the veterans who received a quilt, along with Yorkville resident and Army veteran Patrick Herhalt. Women volunteers donated materials and sewed the quilts given to veterans at the Nov. 18 breakfast. Quilts are sewn monthly at the Montgomery Veterans of Foreign Wars post and St. Charles Moose Lodge. Here are a few photos from the event.
