Portland Police Find Woman Dead After Standoff, Man In Custody

PORTLAND, OR — A woman was found dead and a man is in custody after a nearly 10-hour standoff in Southeast Portland. Police had received a call from a woman saying that she was being held hostage. Police said that the call came from a home on the 2400 block of Southeast 17st Avenue by Division Street around 3:30 on Sunday afternoon. When they arrived, they were met with dozens of shots fired from within the home. Police did not fire back but called for assistance. Live in Portland? Officers immediately called for backup. SWAT teams swarmed the area and shut Division from 174th Avenue to Southeast 162nd Avenue. The Police Bureau's Crisis Negotiating Team reached out to the suspect but to no avail. Officers broke several windows of the home to try to get a better view of what was happening inside. They also used what they called a "chemical agent." Each action was met with more gunfire. Police were finally able to use a robot to break in the front door. They could see a man crawling around on his hands and knees before barricading himself in a room. Just after 1 a.m., officers from the Special Emergency Response Team entered the house and were able to take the man into custody. The woman that they believe made the initial call was found dead inside. the medical examiner will determine how and when she died. Police have not released her name or the name of the person that they took into custody.
